World Polio Day: All you need to know

The Rotary international room their step over a century ago to cherish the birth of Jonas Salk, against poliomyelitis. Mr Jonas developed a vaccine. On 24 October every year, the day is celebrated.


The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in the year of 1988 was established for the use of the inactivated poliovirus vaccine as well as the live oral poliovirus vaccine. The GPEI is a public-private partnership that includes Rotary, the World Health Organization (WHO), the US centres for disease control and prevention, UNICEF, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the governments of the nations.

India- A polio-free nation:

On 27 March in the year of 2014, India received polio-free certification along with the entire South-East Asia Region by WHO. In January 2020, highlighted the nine years ever since it was the last case of polio that was reported in India. To stop o, a nation once considered the most difficult scenario, it demonstrated the urge of the strong surveillance systems, intensive vaccination drive and targeted social mobilization efforts. India must remain vigilant until the disease is eradicated.
The basics of Polio:
Poliomyelitis (Polio), a highly infectious viral disease. It mainly affects young children (under the age of five). The virus is transmitted by a Peron to person and majorly it is spread through the faecal route or the least frequented by the common vehicles (e.g. contaminated water or food) and multiple in the intestine, from where it gets a way to enter the nervous system and cause paralysis.

Symptoms:

Fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting, stiffness of the neck and limbs. Among 200 infections it leads to irreversible paralysis ( most probably the legs). Among these paralyzed patients, 5% to 10% die when their breathing muscles become nonfunctional.

Prevention:

Safe and effective vaccines are there but unfortunately, there is no cure. Through immunization, it can be prevented. The vaccine ( polio) is given multiple times almost maximum times it protects a child for the entire life.
Action plans to eradicate polio that is based on preventing by the immunization of every child until the transmission makes a full stop and the globe is polio-free.
