Draupadi Murmu, who defeated opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha, is expected to become India’s first tribal woman to hold the top constitutional post, succeeding incumbent Ramnath Kovind. Murmu was also appointed as Jharkhand’s first female governor in 2015.
The 15th President will take the oath of office on July 25, since Kovind’s term expires on July 24.
On election day, 99 per cent of the votes cast out of a total of 4,796 electors on the electoral vote list were cast.
This could also be interpreted as an attempt to secure tribal votes in subsequent elections.
