Safer Internet Day 2022: History, Significance and Theme

Every year on February 8th, the world commemorates Safer Internet Day.

A few years ago, the internet was god-given magic, connecting people, making things simple, and making education more accessible. However, over time, the internet has become a pit for all the venomous snakes like jealousy, ego, and anger, spitting poison endlessly, and nowadays, the internet has become such a great sinter, overshadowing its benefits altogether.

Becoming strangely eerie, plain, and strange.

But it’s important to recall the rationality that went into the invention of the internet.

On this unique day, individuals from all around the world join together to make the internet a safer and better environment for everyone, especially children and teenagers.

The European Commission is collaborating with the Insafe/INHOPE network of European Safer Internet Centres (SICs) to organize the day.

The Insafe/INHOPE network is a global community that allows all of its members to collaborate on fostering respectful, responsible, critical, and creative use of digital technology.

Theme

This year, the globe commemorates Safer Internet Day for the 19th time, with the theme “Together for a Better Internet.” Stakeholders from all around the world join together on this unique day to make the internet a safer and better place. They also look at making the internet a less dangerous environment for children and teenagers.

Youth, parents, teachers, educators, children, legislators, and decision-makers are among those who participate in Safer Internet Day. More than 200 nations and territories have joined forces in this effort, extending the campaign’s worldwide impact.

History

Safer Internet Day originated in 2004 as a project of the EU SafeBorders program. It was picked up by the Insafe network as one of its first acts a year later. This has expanded beyond its typical geographic zone throughout time and is currently marked in at least 200 nations and territories across the world. Safer Internet Day has become a major event in the internet calendar as a result of the epidemic.

As the day strives to promote awareness about online issues and contemporary concerns, subjects such as cyberbullying, digital identity, and other social networking difficulties are given significant attention.

Every country has a national center that organizes educational and awareness programs. They also provide a general public hotline and engage with adolescents to guarantee an evidence-based and multi-stakeholder approach to improving the internet. Because of its popularity, Safer Internet Day is now observed all around the world.

Significance

The major goal of this day is to build ties and partnerships with nations that are not part of the network. Responsible stakeholders think that by purchasing this bond, they are investing in a globally coordinated campaign promotion.
