Like every year, the nation is prepared to celebrate Janmashtami with fervour and enthusiasm. The day falls on August 18 and August 19, 2022, this year. The holiday is observed on Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, according to the Hindu calendar. Considering that Lord Krishna is said to have been born at midnight, the nishita puja timing this year on August 19 is between 12.03 and 12.47.
The holiday of Janmashtami commemorates the anniversary of the birth of Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Hindu sources claim that King Kansa, Lord Krishna’s maternal uncle, was in charge of Mathura at the time of his birth. According to legend, the King was inspired to murder his sister Devaki’s offspring after learning that her boys would be responsible for his demise.
He imprisoned Devaki and her husband Vasudeva after hearing the prophecy, and he also slaughtered her six children. Balram, the seventh child, was born when the foetus was mystically transferred from Princess Rohini to Devaki. Vasudeva secretly brought the newborn Lord Krishna to Nand Baba and Yashodha’s home in Vrindavan, where the lord spent his formative years.
In return, Vasudeva gave him a baby girl. She changed into Goddess Durga and forewarned Kansa when he arrived to slay the girl.

A Festival is all about celebration. Devotees spend the day with zeal and excitement, cooking delectables and adorning private temples.
If you’re unsure of how to adorn Lord Krishna’s jhula or which outfits to choose for the Lord, we’ve got you covered.
The following are five themes you may choose for the decorations:
- Floral
Why not adorn the temples with flower decorations as Phoolon ki Holi is a crucial part of Krishna’s tale? You may use marigold, rose, and other vividly coloured flowers. We encourage the use of marigolds in decorations because they add brightness and a fragrant freshness to the space. Marigold garlands can be put on the temple’s walls as well. You may also use flower petals to create a rangoli.
- Vrindavan, India
On Janmashtami, you can recreate the Vrindavan scene in your temple with miniature cows, cottages, trees, swigs, and people. Dress up any children you may have in your home as young Krishna.
- Makhan Matki
We all know that Lord Krishna adores Makhan (butter), hence Janmashtami festivities must include it. Paint a matki (pot) in a variety of bright hues. Additionally, you may adorn it with glitter and glass. A bansuri (flute) can be made at home or purchased. Place the matki in your temple after filling it with Makhan.
- Govardhan Parvat
It is a well-known legend that Lord Krishna used his finger to elevate the Govardhan Parvat. Challenge your artistic abilities with this Janmashtami and recreate the scenario in your temple as well. Making a hill out of cardboard or thermocol sheets and placing it on the finger of your Krishna figure is all that is required. To put it under the slope, you may also cut out some human figurines.
- Radhe-Krishna
The love tale between Radha and Krishna endures forever. So what’s holding you back from attending this year’s Janmashtami festival in the colour of love? Ras-Leela from Vrindavan may be replicated as well. Put lovely clothes and flowers on your Radha and Krishna statues.
