Gangubai Kathiawadi Movie Review: Alia Bhatt’s biggest career risk pays off

Looking towards the Bollywood movie that Alia Bhatt has performed Gangubai Kathiwadi is the most powerful saga that boasts of the best career of the actress. By seeing the trailer the movie has the ability to capture the audiences back to the theatres.
The story of a woman’s journey from being a prostitute to being a Messiah of the oppressed is the movie Gangubai Kathiwadi. The story shows the early 50’s. Alia Bhatt played the role of Ganga Harjivandas is a resident of Kathiawad. Her father is a barrister and she belongs to a well to do family. Ganga always wanted to be an actress and she fell in love with the wrong person where her boyfriend Ramneek ( Varun Kapoor) tells her that he’ll help her to do a big role in a big Hindi film. Ramneek convinced her and she ran away with her boyfriend to Bombay. In Bombay, he takes her to a brothel which is run by Sheela (Seema Pahwa) where she told her that her boyfriend Ramneek has sold her to Sheela for Rs.1000. At first, she objected but later she gives in and joins in the trade of flesh. She met with her first client and slept with him, something changes her and she renamed herself Gangu. It doesn’t take much time where Gangu to become rebellious and went against Sheela. A day came to preach Gangu a lesson a visitor came ( Shaukat Abbas Khan) and asked for Gangu and Sheela got an opportunity she sends her henchmen away. Shaukat attacks Gangu badly and injured her where Gangu has to be hospitalized as Shaukat disfigured her. When Gangu realized Shaukat works for Rahim Lala (Ajay Devgn) a well-known don in Bombay and a quite respectful figure in the same city. Gangu encounters him and tells him the truth whereas Rahim teaches Shaukat a lesson in public. The way Rahim comes forward to help Gangu gives her the much-needed boost. As soon as Sheela passes away Gangu took over the business. She realises that she needs to win the election of the Kamathipura association to turn the ride of the 4000 hustlers residing in the red light area. It wasn’t a piece of cake for her and the opponent was the very powerful Raziabai ( Vijay Raaz). So I don’t want to be the spoiler and narrate the whole story what happens next moulds the rest of the film.
The movie Gangubai Kathiwadi was inspired by the episode of The Matriarch of Kamathipura in S Hussain Zaidi’s book, ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’. The story is fascinating and it raised some important issues. As we all know Sanjay Leela Bhansali how made sure he could capture the attention of the audiences with the concepts, the dance which shows Indian culture where he ensures the viewers get trapped into the world of Gangubai and Kamathipura. In this regard, he doesn’t disappoint. He directed the story sensitively as well as beautifully. The pain of Gangubai comes out beautifully and everyone can empathize with her. The romantic portion between Gangubai and Afsaan which is played by Shantanu Maheshwari could have been shorter as this is when the movie gets a bit slow. The scenes of Rahim Lala give a lot of weightage to the narrative. The film picks up in the Azad Maidan speech scene.
Overall, the movie is a powerful saga and is embellished with terrific moments and one of the best performances which is performed by Alia Bhatt. At the box office, it has the brightest chances to score with the multiplex and it can capture more female audiences.
