Why is Digital Society Day celebrated?

On ‘Digital Society Day’, journalists, students, and related organizations are also rewarded for the efforts made to create awareness about Cyber Laws.

October 17 is a red-letter day for the digital society in India since, on October 17, 2000, the IT Act, and the first law of the digital society in India was notified. The notification gave legal recognition for electronic documents for the first time in the country. The IT Act 2000 recognized cyber crimes as well as prescribed a fast track grievance redressal mechanism for cybercrimes.

The date. October 17 is vital for so many individuals for those who look into the future and speak up for the progress of the country. Digital society day was formulated to commemorate the passage of the IT Act 2000.

Digital Society Day

The IT Act 2000 law in India deals with cybercrimes and electronic commerce. There are many offences listed under the act including hacking in the computer systems, the use of passwords of others, uploading private photos of others, etc. It was passed on October 17 and this day became the date of the modern observance.

Since it enabled all contracts to be formed and supported in digital form, the act became crucial for the growth of the digital society. On this day e-commerce in India came to a higher level of its existence.

The celebration took place for the first time in India in 2006 at Bangalore wherein an event organized by the Digital Society Foundation, a trust promoted by the Cyber Law College on October 17 formally declared as the digital society day. Since this historic day has been commemorated each with activities of interest to the digital society in India.

Other activities carried out by the Digital Society Foundation in a country like India include:

  • To organize workshops and seminars on the topics of cyber law, information security and related areas.
  • To conduct courses in cyber law, information security and related areas.

The significance of the growth cannot be underestimated. The contracts being the lifeblood of both commerce and digitization is the order of the day, the legal recognition brought the entire digital society into the mainstream of commerce.
