The recent sensation Covid-19 and omicron is a top-notch contagious virus of the family SARS CoV-2 so far ever found it is an air-borne disease and the recent mutant omicron is far more contagious than the delta variant that swept the world off its feet last year.
And masks being the primitive tool to keep the virus in its bay it’s true that if we wear better quality mask can prove to help limit the spread of the virus but recently fashion mixed up with mask started making them more fashionable than useful.
All least the virus is not going to attack a less fashion-minded person.
So rather than looking into the type of masks from a fashion point let’s look into the features of standard masks.
All of us emits minute droplets while breathing taking coughing sneezing and probably anything that has to do with our mouth and nose.
So when a person infected with Covid-19 interacts with another uninfected person the virus particles get transmitted along with the droplets from your mouth and nose which can be inhaled by the uninfected person or stay virulent in an object waiting for an unsuspected person to touch it to get infected over time.
What does a mask do here?
So when an infected person or sick person wears a good quality mask with less porosity that reduces the number of particles that come to form an infected person to an in infected person and thus decreases the risk of infecting other persons.
So this is not something new for many people even before the advent of these viruses many surgeons industrial workers and even people in highly infected areas were used to wearing this little mouthpiece.
But in this scenario, Mask is more successful in closed areas with the ratio to the people to ventilation is high.
Types of masks
Various masks include cloth masks, surgical masks, and high filtration masks with various designations known as N95, KN95, KF94, FFP2, etc.
Here in this article, we shall look into the difference between these masks, which one is best suitable against omicron.
A cloth mask is useful in reducing the emissions from an infected person’s nose or mouth but it offers lesser protection for the uninfected person as it doesn’t have the feature to stop smaller particles if used without the filter.
A surgical mask can be made of triple-layer protection possibility but the building structure is not made to seal the face completely it leaves huge gaps between the edge of masks and the face through which the virus-carrying particles can be inhaled and exhaled.
So the popular way to use the full feature of these masks is to use them both by double masking ie wearing a cloth mask that can fit snuggle on the face over the surgical mask to reduce the gaps and increase the filtration.
But the best quality of masks is those built to American N95 standard or similar global standards like (European FF2, Chinese KN95, Korean k94).
And it’s best to avoid masks having valves that don’t filter the exhaled air.
